French

At St John Baptist Primary school, we aspire for all children to develop a passion for learning another language. The modern foreign language taught at KS2 is French. Children develop their language learning skills through the engagement and enjoyment of the rich opportunities we provide them with. French at our school entails the learning of another language through songs, rhyme, poetry, stories and an annual trip to our local French café to present with confidence the vocabulary that has been learnt and immerse ourselves in the French culture.

Learning French supports children to internalise the school value, appreciation, as children are given many opportunities to celebrate and respect the multi-cultural society that we live in and develop a deeper understanding of the world.

The National Curriculum for MFL aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
