Spirituality
At St John Baptist CE Primary School, we believe that spirituality is about helping every child discover who they are, how they relate to others and the world around them, and how they can live a life of purpose, hope and love.
Our Christian vision is that:
In our school family, every person will flourish and become a shining light through living out our faith, being a hope-bringer in times of darkness and showing God's love to all.
We believe that every child is uniquely created in the image of God, with their own gifts, talents and limitless potential. Spiritual development helps children recognise these gifts, ask life's big questions, develop wisdom and grow into compassionate, confident and reflective individuals who make a positive difference in the world.
In line with the Church of England's Vision for Education, we believe that education is about much more than academic success. We seek to provide an education that embraces excellence and academic rigour within a wider framework of spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, moral and social development, enabling every child to flourish.
Windows, Mirrors and Doors
Our understanding of spirituality is inspired by Liz Mills' Windows, Mirrors and Doors model.
Windows – Looking Out
Windows encourage us to look out on the world with curiosity, awe and wonder. Through learning, nature, music, art, science, literature and the experiences of others, children are invited to notice beauty, ask questions and develop a deeper appreciation of God's world and the people within it.
Mirrors – Looking In
Mirrors provide opportunities to reflect on ourselves, our beliefs, our relationships and our experiences. Through discussion, prayer, stillness and thoughtful reflection, children develop self-awareness, recognise their emotions and consider the people they are becoming.
Doors – Moving Forward
Doors encourage us to respond. Spirituality is not simply about thinking differently—it is about living differently. We encourage children to step forward with courage, compassion and hope, using their gifts to serve others, care for God's creation and become shining lights within their communities.
Spirituality Through Our Learning Powers
At St John Baptist, we believe spirituality grows naturally through the way children learn.
Our six Learning Powers help children become resilient, connected, collaborative, expressive, curious and reflective learners. They also create opportunities for children to encounter moments of awe and wonder, reflect deeply and consider how their learning influences the way they live.
Teachers do not seek to provide all the answers. Instead, they create opportunities for children to ask meaningful questions, explore different perspectives and make connections between their learning, themselves, other people and God's world.
Through our Learning Powers, children are encouraged to look through Windows, reflect in Mirrors and step through Doors.
| Learning Power | Window | Mirror | Door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resilience | What if mistakes are helping me grow? | How do I respond when learning is difficult? | How can I encourage someone else who is finding something challenging? |
| Connection | What connections can I see? | How does this help me understand myself, others and God's world? | How can I use this learning to make a positive difference? |
| Collaboration | What can I learn from other people? | How do my actions help others to flourish? | How can we achieve more together than alone? |
| Expression | What if my voice can make a difference? | How can I express my ideas with courage, honesty and kindness? | How can my words bring hope and encouragement to others? |
| Curiosity | I wonder... What if...? | What big questions does this make me ask? | Where might this learning lead me next? |
| Reflection | What have I discovered today? | How has this changed my thinking? | How will this influence the choices I make tomorrow? |
These questions are not intended to have one correct answer. Instead, they create opportunities for children to wonder, reflect, discuss and respond. They help pupils move beyond simply acquiring knowledge towards developing wisdom, compassion and hope.
Spirituality Across School Life
At St John Baptist, spirituality is not taught as a separate subject or added artificially to lessons. Instead, it is gently infused throughout school life, enriching learning, relationships and everyday experiences.
Inspired by our Christian vision, we seek to create a culture where children are encouraged to notice the world around them with curiosity, reflect on what they experience and consider how their learning shapes the people they are becoming.
Spiritual moments often arise naturally. They may be found in the excitement of a scientific discovery, the beauty of a piece of artwork, the emotion of a story, the stillness of prayer, the wonder of the natural world, a thoughtful classroom discussion or an act of kindness between friends. These moments cannot always be planned, but they can be recognised, valued and explored.
Our teachers are attentive to these opportunities. Through thoughtful questioning, meaningful dialogue and time for reflection, they encourage children to wonder together, ask life's big questions and appreciate different perspectives. These experiences help children become increasingly aware of themselves, of others, of the world around them and, for many, of God.
In this way, spirituality is woven naturally into the life of our school. It shapes the relationships we build, the questions we ask, the choices we make and the way we care for one another. As children grow in wisdom, hope and compassion, they are encouraged to use their gifts to serve others and become shining lights within our school, our community and the wider world.
Flourishing Together
Spirituality is a lifelong journey.
At St John Baptist, we want every child to leave our school not only with excellent knowledge and understanding, but also with a sense of wonder, a heart full of compassion and the confidence to ask life's big questions.
By looking through Windows, reflecting in Mirrors and stepping through Doors, we hope our children will develop the wisdom to understand themselves, the courage to care for others and the hope to make a positive difference in the world.
Our prayer is that every child will flourish, grow in character and faith, and truly become a shining light.
